What is Internet Governance? Minimize

Internet governance is the development and application by governments, the private sector and civil society, in their respective roles, of shared principles, norms, rules, decision-making procedures, and programmes that shape the evolution and use of the Internet. (Tunis Agenda for the Information Society, World Summit on the Information Society, 2005 ).


The Internet Governance Forum Minimize
The Internet Governance Forum (IGF) is a multistakeholder forum for dialogue on public policy issues related to key elements of Internet governance.

Since its first meeting, in 2006, the IGF has been convened annually by the United Nations Secretary General,  in accordance with the mandate set out in the Tunis Agenda for the Information Society.

As a platform for discussions, the Forum brings various stakeholder groups to the table as  equals to exchange information and share good practices. The IGF facilitates a common  understanding of how to maximize Internet opportunities and address risks and challenges.

Internet Governance News Minimize
Call for Participation in Defining the IGF 2015 Overarching Theme and Sub-themes

During the December Open Consultations and MAG meeting, discussions were initiated on defining the IGF 2015 overarching theme and sub-themes. A number of proposals for both the overarching theme and sub-themes were made during the meeting and discussions now continue via a dedicated mailing list - igf2015_themes@intgovforum.org.
Stakeholders are invited to join this mailing list and to express their support for some of the already proposed themes, to suggest revisions to these themes or to propose new themes. The deadline for such contributions is 31 December 2014.

IGF 2014 Best Practice Forums Outcome Documents

The final outcome documents of the five Best Practice Forums held at the 2014 IGF meeting are now available, together with a general overview of the process. They reflect the rough consensus views of the lead experts and contributing stakeholders and make suggestions for future work.  
1. Best Practice Forums Overview
2. Developing meaningful multistakeholder participation mechanisms  
3. Regulation and mitigation of unsolicited communications (e.g. "spam")
4. Establishing and supporting Computer Security Incident Response Teams (CSIRT) for Internet security
5. Creating an enabling environment for the development of local content
6. Online child protection

IGF 2015

The tenth meeting of the IGF is scheduled to take place in João Pessoa, Brazil, on 10-13 November 2015.

December Open Consultations and MAG Meeting
The first Open Consultations and Multistakeholder Advisory Group (MAG) Meeting in the IGF 2015 preparatory process took place on 1-3 December 2014, in Geneva, Switzerland. These consultations also took stock of the IGF 2014 meeting, looking at what worked well and what did not.
