Ecuador ended 2016 with a total internet penetration of 55.6 percent, according to the latest data from telecommunications ministry Mintel. The figure is more than double the rate of 25.7 percent posted in 2008, a year before the ministry was set up, with the access rate in urban areas (63%) still well above that of the country's rural provinces (38%). Although only 36.0 percent of Ecuador's homes have fixed internet access, some 90.1 percent have access to mobile telephony, said Mintel.
