On 6 July 2011, US President Barack Obama will
hold his very first Twitter town hall—answering questions about the
economy and jobs that are submitted to Twitter with the hashtag,
#AskObama, via live webcast from the White House.
The announcement was made via a tweet from @whitehouse on 30 June 2010.
Twitter’s co-founder, Jack Dorsey, will moderate the event and the
company will also curate and choose the questions with its own search
engine and curation features. Obama’s answers will be streamed live from
the White House website and an event website set up by Twitter, askobama.twitter.com.
A new @townhall Twitter account has been created as a central source of updates for the event.
Macon Phillips, Special Assistant to the President and Director of
Digital Strategy, said that the event was an opportunity for Obama to
use the Twitter platform to hear directly from people outside
of Washington.
Since Obama took office, the White House has held online town halls
on various mediums like Facebook and Youtube. In the last month, the
president has also started tweeting on his @BarackObama account, a task previously left to his team.
