Chilean Foreign Minister Alfredo Moreno said Thursday his country was counting on Latin American and Caribbean support in its bid to win a seat on the United Nations Security Council.
Ten non-permanent members are elected for two-year terms by the General Assembly. Five memberes are replaced every year. Chile, a four-time council non-permanent member, is running again for the 2015-2016 term.
Moreno told a media conference here President Sebastian Pinera would cite Chile's respect for international law and concern with global security in making Chile's case for inclusion at the 68th session of the U.N. General Assembly on Sept. 24 in New York.
Pinera and Moreno will arrive in New York on Sept. 20 to meet delegations of other countries. It needs to gain a two-thirds majority (128 affirmative votes) to win a fifth spell on the Security Council.
The prospects looked good for Chile from a regional perspective, "but here the whole world votes," Moreno said, referring to the General Assembly.
