A government panel has proposed a review of tax and social welfare measures that may discourage women from working.

A subgroup of the Industrial Competitiveness Council on Friday sought to reduce or scrap income tax deductions given to husbands whose wives do not work.

Such tax relief is harmful because it discourages women from getting jobs, the subgroup said. Such tax deductions should be replaced by benefits designed to support households with children, it said.
