The government will ask local governments to draw up a comprehensive plan to manage aging infrastructure, including roads, bridges and public facilities, in fiscal 2014, it was learned Monday.
More than 100 local governments have conducted surveys on buildings such as their offices and schools, but it will be the first time for aging infrastructure such as roads, bridges, tunnels, and water supply and sewerage systems to be checked on a nationwide basis.
The government has been discussing measures to deal with the nation’s old infrastructure following an accident in the Sasago Tunnel on the Chuo Expressway in December 2012 in which ceiling panels collapsed, killing nine people.
The Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry will request local governments to map out a “comprehensive plan to manage public facilities and others” as early as this month, according to sources.
