President Abdulla Yameen on Wednesday asked ministries to reduce MVR5000 from the monthly salaries and allowances of state ministers and deputy ministers.
Presidential spokesperson Ibrahim Muaz Ali said the president had sent a letter on Wednesday asking the ministries to follow the new policy in preparing their budget. It was part of the spending cuts being made by the government, he added.
State ministers receive MVR46,000 per month as salary and allowance whilst deputy ministers are given MVR35,000 per month as their salary and allowance.
The government has to spend MVR1.1 million per month for the salaries and allowances of the 25 state ministers, and MVR1.5 million for the 44 deputy ministers. The salary cut would save the government more than MVR300,000 every month.
