Indonesian Environment Ministry embraced businessmen under the coordination of Trade and Industry Chamber (KADIN) to address its aims related to the implementation of 10 years Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP).
The concrete move intended to address implementation of SCP drive was conducted in a MoU signing between the ministry's and KADIN senior officials in Pekanbaru, the capital of Riau province on Tuesday, a statement released by the ministry said.
The signing of the MoU was regarded as a concrete move to encourage businessmen across the country in procuring sustainable goods for their production processes. Such a move was greatly expected to increase the access to sustainable goods among the people.
"We urge all stakeholders to actively take part in the implementation of the 10 years SCP framework. Businessmen should be the government's ultimate partner in addressing sustainable consumption and production. They hold strategic role in upstream section because it is them who determine business strategy that include planning, investment, product design, adopt the technology to run the production and the factory location," Indonesian Environment Minister Balthazar Kambuaya said in the statement.
If the businessmen do so, it would increase procurement of environment-friendly good by government and private sector as well and eventually would spur green lifestyle among the public, the minister added.
The minister said that should all of those processes are going well, it would advance the environment preservation, people's social, economy and life quality conditions.
Given that Indonesia has a huge population of over 240 million, records continuing annual high growth with growing number of middle class society and productive age man force as well, implementation of SCP in Indonesia is very essential as it may support the country's environment and natural resources supporting power, preserves the nation's sustainable high growth and improve people's welfare, the minister pointed out.
Indonesia was appointed as one of ten United Nations Sustainable Consumption and Production (UNSCP) members in a United Nations' Economic Social Council (UN ECOSOC) meeting held in Geneva on July 19.
As a member of UNSCP Board, Indonesia was tasked to actively directing and guiding the implementation of 10 year framework programs for sustainable consumption and production (10YFP SCP) in international level that would be facilitated by United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) that acts as the 10YFP SCP secretariat.
