The Environment Ministry aims to develop an accurate projection model for air pollution in response to an increase in particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) and other materials.
The ministry plans to include ¥626 million in comprehensive measure expenses, 2.6 times higher than for this fiscal year, in its budget request for the next fiscal year.
The envisaged model will gather detailed measurements of air quality in every city, town and village. The data can be used to deal with cross-border air pollution from China.
With a program to analyze the volume of domestic emissions from automobiles and other sources as well as meteorological conditions, the model will make projections that take air pollutants generated both overseas and domestically into account. The ministry hopes to put the model into practical use in two to three years.
A high density of PM2.5 in the air has been recorded for some days, especially in the Kyushu region, since a severe bout of air pollution in China in January. The ministry has set provisional guidelines for air pollution advisories such as those recommending that residents not go outside unless necessary. Kumamoto, Shimane and other prefectures have issued such warnings.
