A government council on social security reform is expected to focus on increasing support for children and future generations in its report due out in early April, according to a draft discussed Friday.
The council is headed by Keio University President Atsushi Seike, and the draft consists of measures in three major areas of reform: the low birth rate, medical and nursing care services, and pensions. Friday’s meeting also consisted of a general discussion as well as creating a message for the public.
A “21st-century model” for social security has been proposed.
Based on the council’s report, the government will draw up an outline of necessary legislation by Aug. 21.
Akira Amari, minister for comprehensive reform of the country’s tax and social security systems, urged the council to issue directions and schedules that are as detailed as possible so that legal measures can be taken accordingly.
