Myanmar's House of Representatives ( Lower House) has approved a printing and publishing enterprise bill to become law which gives protection to publishers, official media reported Friday.
The bill was submitted by the Ministry of Information with amendments.
"It needs to protect these media and their freedom by law," an member of parliament was quoted as saying.
"It can be said that in fact, that bill is in urgent need. It is also essential for smooth functioning of publishing enterprises, " the member of parliament with the Thingangyan constituency said.
Other members of parliament of Ahlone constituency added that " that bill would bring benefit to people, printers and publishers."
The Myanmar government started media reform in June 2011, and in August 2012, domestic media publication control was totally liberalized.
As a follow-up, Myanmar announced in December 2012 free publication of private daily newspapers, dissolving its Press Scrutiny and Registration Division.
Under its media reform, the government has so far granted 31 private dailies as of July 1 since April 1, of which 9 private dailies have been put into circulation, while the rest is yet to be published.
The 7th session of the Lower House is underway in Nay Pyi Taw.
