SINGAPORE: The Defence Ministry (MINDEF) is reviewing its medical support system to provide better care for Singapore's National Servicemen. Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen made the announcement at the opening of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Medical Simulation Training Centre on Friday. The SAF is looking into partnering more experienced doctors with army doctors, as part of the review. It is exploring a pilot Physician Partnership Program to engage experienced civilian doctors to partner Full-Time National Servicemen serving as medical officers in the medical centres. This will be for medical consultations as well as to provide mentorship for the medical officers and medics. These collaborations also help augment the limited numbers of regular doctors within the SAF. The review also seeks to find ways to enhance SAF's emergency medical support system by working with the Emergency Medicine Departments in hospitals. Dr Ng said: "We recognise that the medical personnel working in hospitals, day in day out for example in the A&E Department, have more experience as they see larger numbers of patients. "For us in the SAF to upgrade our medical care, we ought to be either utilising their resources or working with them to learn from them."
