The Seoul Metropolitan Government will provide 540 million won in loan interest to roughly 82-hundred college students to lessen their debt burden.

The Seoul government announced Wednesday it agreed to the financial assistance following requests from some 65-thousand college students who took out ordinary student loans from the Korean Student Aid Foundation between 2009 and the first half of this year.

The average loan among students who asked for assistance was five million won. Those who get the aid will receive 66-thousand won in average interest for the past six months, and their loan interest will be covered every semester until they graduate.

The Seoul government expects additional requests in September from students who grew up outside Seoul but study in the capital and students who come from a family with lots of children.
