Aus State Dept Puts ERP on Cloud

The New South Wales Department of Trade and Investment is deploying a new cloud to deliver agency-wide savings across the State.

This cloud deployment, utilising software-as-a-service (SaaS), will save the department and its 16 cluster agencies more than US$12.5 million (AUD$12.5 million) a year in operational costs.

Portfolios managed by the department and its cluster agencies encompass trade and investment, business development, primary industries, food and water, mineral resources and energy, as well as tourism, hospitality and the arts.

NSW Trade’s chief information officer, David Kennedy, says that adopting world best-practice, cloud-based services will deliver substantial savings on hardware and associated costs. This roll-out also improves systems security.

“It will enable us to implement the new SaaS model in a timeframe that addresses our business priorities. The SaaS model, compared to traditional on-premise Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems makes good business sense and represents the future.”

This new single integrated enterprise resource planning system will be the backbone for finance. This includes budgeting, accounting, asset management and reporting.

Purchasing, procurement, human resources and payroll management will also be supported by the cloud deployment.

The project is being completed in two parts, with initial consolidation of the core (NSW Trade and Investment) department on to the platform by the end of this year. Other cluster agencies are expected to come on board by June 2013.

The cloud project has been awarded to SAP Australia and New Zealand under a US$14.5 million (AUD$14.5 million) three-year contract. SAP will deliver a range of cloud solutions that utilise its Business ByDesign offerings.

For SAP, the NSW Trade and Investment contract is the first cloud platform win in the Australian public sector.

“This was a strategic deal both for NSW Trade and Investment and SAP,” noted Andrew Barkla, president and managing director, SAP Australia.

“By consolidating its ERP onto SAP’s cloud platform, the department will realise the benefits and value that software-as-a-service delivers.”

SAP initially launched ByDesign in the US and Germans markets in 2007. The company had set a target of reaching 10,000 customers and US$1 billion (AUD$1 billion) in revenues by 2010.
