Under the “Digital Malaysia” initiative, the government hopes to generate RM31.2 billion (US$9.9 billion) in investment through Public-Private Partnership (PPP) schemes and create 160,000 ICT jobs by 2020.
The CEO of Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC), Badlisham Ghazali, added that the home-grown ICT industry is expected to contribute 17 per cent—amounting to US$93.2 billion—to the nation’s income by the same year. The MDeC is the agency that oversees and directs ICT initiatives in Malaysia under the purview of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI).
Ghazali said that eight major projects are currently being rolled out in a bid to make Malaysia a regional hub for ICT development, with more on the way. These projects are:
the Asian e-fulfilment hub, expected to create 1,622 jobs and eventually contribute US$90 million to the economy;
e-payment services for SMEs and microenterprises, expected to create 2,000 jobs and contribute US$1.6 billion to the economy;
shared cloud enterprise services;
microsourcing for income generation;
needs-based deployment of societal programmes to community;
on-demand customised online education;
growing the embedded systems industry; and
a mobile digital wallet.
“Today, Malaysia enjoys a strong ICT foundation but a holistic digital initiative is still needed to ensure the nation is able to advance further,” said Ghazali at a media conference, where these figures were announced.
