Singapore’s Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts (MICA) has appointed Janadas Devan as the Chief of Government Communications, reporting directly to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry.

Devan will start serving as the highest officer in charge of public sector information services on 1 July 2012.In this role, he will coordinate communications work throughout the government, lead a team of around 180 officers in different government agencies and statutory boards, and improve the public sector communications network. A major role of the portfolio is to communicate with the public about government policies and plans, therefore helping achieve good governance.

After the General Elections in May last year, during which the ruling People’s Action Party recorded the lowest percentage of votes in history, the government has come out with multiple measures to revamp the way it communicates with the public.

Before the appointment, the 58 year old was the associate editor of the Straits Times, a daily newspaper where he spent 15 years.

Last year, Devan was appointed as the Director of the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS), a post that he will continue to hold concurrently with the Communications portfolio. IPS is an academic think tank affiliated to National University of Singapore’s Lee Kwan Yew School of Public Policy.
