YANGON, March 21 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar has invited observers from nine other member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as well as its dialogue partners to monitor the April 1 parliamentary by-election, according to the ASEAN Secretariat Wednesday.
In its invitation letter to the ASEAN Secretariat, Myanmar requested the teams to arrive in Yangon on March 28 to attend a briefing the following day.
Altogether 160 candidates will stand for 17 political parties in the by-election for 48 vacant seats in 10 regions or states, including 40 seats of the House of Representatives, six seats of the House of Nationalities and two seats of regional or state parliament.
Both the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) and the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) will contest all 48 seats.
ASEAN comprises Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, while ASEAN's dialogue partners include Australia, Canada, China, European Union, India, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, South Korea and the United State.
