SINGAPORE: Criminals are developing new tactics to trap their prey online.
Experts said hackers are now using victim's various Internet accounts to commit fraud.
In the past year alone, they've seen new scams pop up every one or two months.
Chinese national "Xiao Fen" who's working in Singapore, has been communicating with her parents through popular Chinese website QQ.com.
But a hacker accessed her account after she clicked on a link sent by a friend.
The hacker pretended to be her and cheated her parents of S$4,000.
With the rapid development of social networks, hackers have turned their attention to popular networking sites.
They're also beginning to lure online users by posting popular pictures or content online.
An example would be free food vouchers given to those who fill up an online survey.
And some fast food owners have declared on their Facebook page that they do not have such promotions.
Another tactic is one where hackers steal information via online marketing scams using well-known brands.
Tong Hui Leong, IT Security Consultant, said: "A few years ago, they've relied on emails to prey on victims. Recently, these fraudsters have made use of international news.
"For example, the death of Steve Jobs. They will send messages asking people to go to the Facebook page to leave comments in memory of Steve Jobs.
"After they do so, they will be brought to another webpage that indicates they can win an iPad if they fill up a form.
"As far as we know, about 15,000 have fallen for this."
