Bangladesh: Dalits Demand Law to End Discrimination, Ensure Rights

The dalits on Wednesday put forth a 10-point demand, including the enactment of a law to end discrimination against them and to ensure their rights. They demanded that the government should make it a punishable offence for others to treat them as ‘untouchable.’ Policy makers are dreaming of a digital Bangladesh without including such a large community in mainstream society, the speakers said at a press briefing. Manusher Jonno Foundation and the National Federation for Dalit Movement, which was launched on the day, organised the briefing at the National Press Club marking International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination that fell on the day.

Bangladesh Harijan Oikya Parishad, Bangladesh Dalit Parishad, Antaja Parishad, Dalit Student Development Parishad, Dalit Nari Parishad, Rishi Panchayet Forum, Minority Rights Forum are organised the federation. The Bangladesh Harijan Oikya Paishad secretary general, Nirmal Chandra Das, said that there were more than one crore Dalits in the country and the government had very poor initiatives for them. He said that the government should provide quota and scholarship for the Dalits and the Harijan in jobs and education in keeping with the the constitution. Nirmal said that 15 lakh Harijan people had been working as cleaners and sweepers in city corporations, municipalities, government and non-government offices for years but their jobs had not been regularised.

The Bangladesh Dalit Parishad general secretary, Ashok Das, expressed his concerns that the policy-makers were dreaming of a digital Bangladesh without including this large community in the mainstream society. The Harijan people are still out of the government’s social safety net programme, he said. The National Federation for Dalit Movement convener, Rajkumar Das, the Antaja Parishad president, Emdadul Haque and the Nari Parishad organising secretary, Shibani Das, and member Pannalal Banshfor attended the briefing.
