The Ministry of Industries in cooperation with United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has started reviewing the investment policy of Bangladesh to make foreign direct investment (FDI) effective for development.

The investment policy review will help maximise the contribution of FDI towards achieving national development goals and minimise potential risks or adverse consequences, officials said at a workshop on Thursday.

The Ministry of Industries, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and UNDP jointly arranged the workshop at Sonargaon Hotel with Industries Secretary KH Masud Siddiqui in the chair.

The UNCTAD officials, including economist Quentin Dupriez, international consultant Rory Allan, UNDP economist Richard Marshal, joint industries secretary (international cooperation) Afroza Khan, senior assistant secretary Mohammed Mizanur Rahman, representatives from different ministries and trade bodies took part in the workshop.

A fact-finding mission from UNCTAD, already in Dhaka, will be staying here till March 29 and will collect information needed for the preparation of the draft report on policy review.

Once completed, the draft report will be presented at a national workshop in Dhaka and all stakeholders will be invited to participate in a transparent consultative process.

The report will be revised and finalised on the basis of comments and feedbacks to be received during the stakeholders’ national workshop.

The draft report will be shared with the Ministry of Industries prior to its presentation at the national workshop, officials said.

Earlier, the Industries Ministry sought technical assistance on investment policy from the UNCTAD under its IPR programme.
