Mr Lilo said it was part of an effort to remove unnecessary staff appointed by his predecessors.
The Solomon Star newspaper has reported the names of eight of those believed to have been fired. They are: Tione Bugotu (Lands, Housing and Survey), Benjamin New Year (Mines and Rural Electrification), Francis Oradani (Forestry), Alex Douglas (Mines), John Tuhaika (Cabinet), Henry Pika (Justice and Legal Affairs), Charles Viva (Education and Human Resources) and Paul Tovua (RAMSI).
Meanwhile, Gela MP Mark Kemakeza has been sentenced to 14 months' jail after he was found guilty of misusing public funds.
Honiara reporter Koroi Hawkins told Pacific Beat a by-election can be avoided if Kemakeza successfully appeals against the sentence.
"With the sentence of 14 months, according to the constitution, this would automatically disqualify Kemakeza from his seat," Mr Hawkins explained.
"Though he does have the usual 30 days to appeal and since it's a Magistrates Court case, I believe he may be able to appeal to the High Court and if their ruling isn't satisfactory, then to the Court of Appeal."
During the appeals process Kemakeza will remain an MP.
