S. Korea Faces Highest Risk of Water Shortage in OECD

Korea faces the biggest risk of a water shortage among member countries of the OECD, the organization said in a report published Wednesday. This is referred to as "water stress," or the total demand for potable water compared to the available amount. The higher the level of water stress, the greater the chances of a water shortage.

Korea's fees for tap water and sewage treatment are evaluated as the second cheapest among the 22 OECD member countries listed in the comparison.

According to the report, Korea's water stress level stands at 40 percent, the highest among the 34 member nations. It added that a lot of pollutants from farms and other sources contaminate the water table, requiring excessive amounts of money for purification and exacerbating the country's water stress level.

Belgium and Spain have water stress levels of around 30 percent, coming in second and third, followed by Japan, the U.S., Poland and Mexico.
