The United Nations Public Administration Programme has announced the launch of its “E-Government Survey 2012: E-Government for the People” on 29 February 2012, and Korea maintains its position in the 1st place since 2010 as achieving the greatest e-government both in development and participation indices.

This assessment conducted by UNDESA rates the e-government performance of countries relative to one another for the 193 member states of the United Nations, and identifies leading countries in e-government development since 2003.

In 2012, the United Nations e-Government assessment focused on "E-Government for the People" with a special emphasis on expanding online services towards its citizens.

With “e-government development index”, Korea ranked first followed by the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Denmark, United States, and France. It is also noteworthy that Korea has gained its recognition as the top ranker in “e-government participation index”, reflecting on President Lee Myung Bak administration’s proactive implementation of “Smart Government Strategy as a next generation of e-Government”.

Korean government has made continuous efforts in e-government development, putting emphasis on more integrated, user-centric public service delivery.

Mr. Maeng Hyung Kyu, the minister of MOPAS, remarked that this will positively lead to Korean Government’s commitment to strengthening international cooperation on informatization in line with global community’s attempt to narrowing digital divide.
