Singapore Considering Laws to Curb Cyber Bullying

Singapore currently has no laws against cyber harassment, bullying and other antisocial acts on the Internet, unlike Britain, Australia, India and the US.

Singapore is considering introducing laws to combat cyber bullying and other forms of Internet harassment.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is studying the need for such laws, with the Law Ministry and Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts, said Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean.

The ministries, while looking into the subject, will consider enhancing the ways a victim of a non-criminal wrongdoing, such as online defamation, can seek redress.

For instance, even while he is suing for defamation, he should be able to protect himself by obtaining an injunction to order the removal of the defamatory statements on the Internet, said Mr Teo, who is also the Home Affairs Minister.
