The Azerbaijani leadership has not stopped the fight against corruption and is continuing to fight this evil, a top presidential official has said. Ali Hasanov, head of the public policy department at the Presidential Administration, said the government had notched up some success in its fight against systemic corruption. "The Azerbaijani government is fighting corruption by both economic and administrative methods," he said. "The economic reasons causing corruption are being identified and eradicated, transparent management practices are implemented in all spheres of state governance and in the monetary and fiscal system. As for administrative and legal practices, the state is fighting those who are involved in corruption crimes.” "This work will continue until the eradication of this evil in our country. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and our state are determined on this," he said. Hasanov said that the state had focused attention on the full eradication of corruption in Azerbaijan: "We have been in a systematic fight against corruption for over two years and will continue to fight it.” Azerbaijan stepped up its fight against corruption following a cabinet meeting in January last year. A spate of sackings and demotions for bribery and abuse of office followed in Azerbaijani ministries and other agencies, including the road police, customs, universities and hospitals. Reports of arrests and dismissals for corruption have become less frequent but still occur, with three judges reprimanded for "creating conditions for corruption" earlier this month.
