Australia’s peak ICT research body, National ICT Australia (NICTA), has launched a “Digital Productivity Showcase” facility that displays new applications for digital communications.
This purpose-built “futuristic space” or facility is located at NICTA’s Sydney head office. This space demonstrates how digital tools can be used to improve productivity, access information and streamline digital services.
This digital space will be a “living laboratory” to help build Australia’s digital future, says Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy.
As governments escalate online services, organisations need to make “technology more useable for humans,” Senator Conroy says.
Government digital services include healthcare for rural communities, on-line education, and community care.
Among the displays, one shows how a non-English speaking patient in a remote area can file a Medicare claim form using the National Broadband Network (NBN) and video interpreting services.
A claim form and doctor’s receipts can be scanned using a high-definition document reader – with remote verification capabilities.
Other displays show how end-users can understand and get value from massive data stores, back-up and recovery systems using a public cloud, as well as social TV apps, and mobile communications.
This digital space offers a low-risk environment to create and test new technologies, notes NICTA’s CEO, Hugh Durrant-Whyte.
NICTA leads in the development of award-winning technologies, among these, face-recognition technology that is being used at major airports and seaports.
Face-recognition technology tracks the movement of crowds with pinpoint accuracy, including behaviour patterns.
NICTA has also finalised a three-year agreement with a US-based surveying company. This partnership taps into automatic video analysis technology that was developed by NICTA.
This technology helps create inventories of road signs and power poles throughout a region. These inventories can help tackle maintenance, safety, and regulatory issues, while reducing the number of fatalities at night.
Australia has successfully used this automatic video analysis technology for three years, and is now sharing its expertise in international markets.
