JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Indonesia ranks 7th among 32 countries in terms of illegal software use, says a survey conducted by the Business Software Alliance (BSA) and Ipsos Public Affairs in 2010. "The research was based on the behavior of software users and the lack of law enforcement against those who use pirated software," Secretary General of the Indonesian Anti-Forgery Society (MIAP) Justisiari P Kusumah said on Thursday.
Justisiari, who is also a lawyer for BSA Indonesia, said BSA conducted the survey on 400-500 respondents in 32 countries. The results of another research conducted by BSA show 74 percent of personal computer users worldwide use illegal software. "At present Indonesia ranks 11th with the number of illegal software users accounting for 87 per cent of the overall software users," he said quoting the results of a study conducted by International Data Corporation in 2010 Piracy Study and released in May 2011.
Meanwhile, the results of a study conducted by MIAP and the Economic and Public Investigation Institute of University of Indonesia (LPEM FEUI) in 2010 suggested that pirated software was one of the products mostly used by Indonesian consumers in 2010, reaching 34.1 per cent of the overall software users. "MIAP feels that it is its responsibility to publicize the fact that the circulation and use of fake or pirated goods has directly inflicted losses to the state and eliminated a number of job opportunities."
