Dhaka, Feb 9 (UNB) - The government has been asked to take a farmer-friendly agricultural policy, raise subsidy in agriculture and give incentives to farmers.

They made the call at a roundtable held on Wednesday at DRU auditorium in the city, which was followed by a media conference.

Both the programmes were organized by six peasants (farmer) organizations - Bangladesh Krishak Samity, Bangladesh Bhumihin Samity, Jatiya Krishak Jote, Bangladesh Krishak Federation, Sangjukta Krishak O Khetmajur Samity and Bangladesh Krishak Sabha.

At the media conference, leaders of the six farmers` bodies placed a 6-point-demand to the government.

The demands are: Fixing incentive price for the farmers one month before the harvest of their crops, ban on import during the harvest of the seasonal crops, building of cold storages according to the need, moratorium on price hike of agri inputs including fertilizers and seeds, agricultural policies prescribed to the government and forced upon it from outside the country (donors) to be rejected and tough step against marketing and selling of adulterated agro inputs.

Subal Sarkar, general secretary of Bangladesh Bhumihin Samity read out a written statement at the media conference.

Bangladesh Krishak Samity president Morshed Ali, Jatiya Krishak Jote secretary Anwarul Islam Babu, Sangjukta Krishak O Khetmajur Samity secretary Shahjahan Kabir Zahir and Harun-or-Rashid, among others, addressed the round table and also spoke at the press briefing.
