Some 80,000 ultra poor families of Bangladesh will be included in the mainstream of development as the government launched a project to ensure their food and livelihood security, said officials yesterday.

They said the women under the project will be given training in various vocational activities and gender issues which would help them upgrade their position in society.

The project titled ‘Food and Livelihood Security (FLS)’ will be implemented in Chapainawabganj, Natore and Naogaon districts by June 2014, they added.

The department of women affairs is entrusted with implementing the project at a cost of 2.2mn taka. The executive committee of the highest decision-making National Economic Council (NEC) has already approved the project.

The European Union (EU) will provide 96.72% of funds for the project while the government will contribute 2.41%.

The officials said different non-government organisations, under the project, will motivate the women to squirrel away a part of their earnings and also bring them under the micro-credit scheme to improve their livelihood standard.

The project also aims to strengthen the human resources of the department of women affairs through training, technical assistance, workshop and seminar. Besides, efficiencies of non-government organisations will also be enhanced to achieve the goal of sustainable development through profit-making activities in the project areas.

The main activities of the project include hiring manpower, organising training and workshop, providing financial assistance, and arranging logistics.

Officials said the EU also took a development programme for women in 1995 with the assistance of its Multipurpose Food Security Fund that was implemented during 1996 - 2001.
