Bank staff and hairdressers are among workers who will soon be subject to the labor law, which prohibits more than 52 hours of work per week. The Economic and Social Development Commission, a tripartite panel of the government, labor unions and employers, on Tuesday announced a policy restricting working hours in 16 new sectors.
The government plans to revise the labor law based on this policy. Once it is implemented, only 13 percent of all 10.55 million workers may still be compelled to work more than 52 hours per week, compared to the current 38 percent.
Under the current law, in twelve industries -- such as finance, insurance, and communications -- workers can work more than the legal limit of 40 hours of work and 12 hours of overtime on workdays based on a written agreement between labor and management. But the presidential commission decided to re-divide them into 26 categories.
The commission has decided to restrict working hours in 16 of the 26 new categories, while still allowing more than 52 working hours a week in the rest, including land transportation.
But even there the commission will impose stricter regulations, such as setting an upper limit on working hours and requiring employers to specify jobs or departments where longer working hours are needed.
