Nepal Sees Mobile Base Exceed 11 Mln

Nepal had 12.83 million telephony users on 15 June, up from 12.23 million on 15 May, according to figures from the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA). The total comprises 11.30 million mobile subscribers, 837,705 fixed-line subscribers, and 695,893 other telephony users (satellite and limited mobility services). Furthermore, Nepal counted 2.94 million internet users.

The number of mobile customers grew from 12.23 million on 15 May to 12.83 million in mid-June. Of the total, 10.44 million were GSM users, up from 9.84 million a month earlier, and the remainder use Nepal Telecom's CDMA service called Sky Phone. Spice Nepal (Ncell) led with 5.42 million GSM subscribers followed by Nepal Telecom with a customer base of 5.01 million.

The number of fixed telephony users in Nepal slipped to 837,705 from 844,990 a month earlier. Of the total, 609,750 were PSTN users and 227,955 were WLL users. Nepal Telecom grew its PSTN base to 601,452, followed by STM Telecom Sanchar with 5,244 customers, Nepal Satellite Telecom with 2,456 customers, and Smart with 598 PSTN subscribers, down from 1,168 in mid-may. Nepal Telecom also had 157,297 WLL users and United Telecom had 70,658 WLL subscribers.

Furthermore, Nepal counted 2.94 million internet users, up from 2.50 million reported in mid-May and the penetration rate stood at 10.28 percent. Some 2.67 million people connect to the internet using GPRS, followed by 151,693 internet users that connect through CDMA 1X. Some 66,944 internet subscribers use ADSL and there were also 14,333 cable internet users, and 19,067 dial-up users. Also, 21,080 internet users connect through wireless or fibre optic technologies.
