THE environmental management system (EMS) is a tool that is fast being used in Australian states and other parts of the world to ensure best practice environmental management, an expert says.
Mineral Resource Authority (MRA) technical branch manager Lyndah Brown-Kola said in a presentation during a two-day Papua New Guinea Mining and Petroleum Environment Seminar at the Crowne Plaza Hotel yesterday that this helped in ensuring compliance with applicable legal and other requirements and to ensure the impact of EMS on small to medium scale mines.
“It is a tool used by large scale mines in the country and is legislated for in the Environment Act 2000, with many mining and petroleum companies having it as a condition in their environmental permit conditions,” Brown-Kola said.
“So what is the impact of environmental management system on small to medium scale mines against this international bench mark?” she asked.
She said the EMS had been a tool used by major mines such as Newcrest Lihir Operations and the petroleum industry such as Oil Search Ltd.
“However many small to medium scale mines are yet to fully appreciate and understand the advantages of this tool.
“Over the past six months, MRA has carried out assessments on selected mines using the EMS standard and the majority of mines assessed have shown support and appreciated the process used after seeing some preliminary results,” Brown-Kola said.
