Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has instructed all cyber cafes to keep detailed record of their customers.
NTA has asked the cyber cafes through their Internet Service Providers (ISP) to keep details including name, permanent and temporary address of the customers before letting them use the internet.
It has also asked the cyber cafes to verify the details by checking the government issued identity cards such as driving license, citizenship certificate of passports.
Foreigners should show their passport before using the internet, according to the new regulation. NTA has asked the ISPs to ensure such provision is implemented strictly by three months.
NTA adopted such measure to mitigate cyber crimes and the tendency of using cyber café computers for extortion and threats.
Although, such provision was in place few years ago, it was practised only for a short period.
