Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is calling on Asian countries to work together as the “moment has come” to make the region “the continent of the future.
Yudhoyono told over 600 participants at the World Economic Forum (WEF) on East Asia of the confidence and resilience Indonesia has shown amid the global economic slowdown.
“I notice that this newfound confidence is not particular to Indonesia. You can see it throughout Asia. In my heart I do believe that Asia’s moment has come, and that a much brighter future lies ahead. But we cannot take this for granted,” Yudhoyono said in the opening remarks of the WEF at the Shangri-La Hotel in Jakarta on Sunday (June 12).
Several Asian countries have successfully endured the 2008 global economic crisis and slowdown with higher growth rates than developed nations in Europe and the US.
The President suggested several ways that Asia might become “the continent of the future”.
The first was to address the global imbalances by, among other things, keeping markets and societies open. “We all need to make structural adjustments to correct global imbalances. Asia - more than any other region - can help achieve a strong, sustainable and balanced world economy.”
Second, he said, Asia must address growing pressures from food, energy and water insecurity, as 60 percent of the world’s 7 billion people live in Asia.
Yudhoyono added Asia was a center for global innovation that must tap its youth, to preserve and build on what was best about the continent: its rich diversity.
“If we can do all this, then we shall be able to claim our time as the Asian Century. And we can be sure that Asian Century means a century of progress and peace, and one of cooperation and collaboration.” Yudhoyono said. (By Esther Samboh)
