“This region (Asia) is still facing many challenges in the field of education,” said Larijani in a gathering of the Executive Board of the Forum of Asia-Pacific Parliaments for Education (FASPPED) on Saturday.

The senior Iranian official pointed out that almost half of the world's adult population who are deprived of education are in Asia, reported Fars News Agency.

“Moreover, 5 out of the 15 countries which host 75% of the illiterate adults [in the world] are Asian countries,” the top Iranian parliamentarian underlined.

“On the other hand, Asia is facing other big challenges such as the negative effects of the [global] economic crisis, poverty, slow economic growth, malnutrition, lack of food security, cultural barriers and natural disasters, and above all, military occupation of some regional countries,” Larijani went on to say.

“These are hurdles in the way of development and progress in Asia,” he underscored.

Larijani then touched upon the awakening of the regional nations swept by popular revolutions.

“At the same time, the world is witnessing popular and justice-seeking uprisings in the region, and nations would like to take their destiny into their own hands,” he noted.

The Iranian parliament speaker also touched upon the double standards that certain countries have adopted vis-à-vis democratic movements, and condemned the Israeli regimes brutalities against Palestinians.

As long as countries such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Bahrain and occupied Palestine are under occupation, there will be no room for development and progress, Larijani concluded.
