SINGAPORE:
Information, Communication and the Arts (MICA) Minister Yaacob Ibrahim
said on Monday the prevalence of social media and increasing volume of
online engagements have transformed the way governments conduct their
business.
He said many governments have "gone online" in an effort to better serve and manage broader participation from citizens.
In Singapore, mobile applications on smartphones allow the community to give feedback on issues in their neighbourhood.
Speaking
at the opening of the seventh Ministerial Forum on ICT, Dr Yaacob said
such contributions have allowed the government to enhance its policies
to ensure that they remain relevant and sufficiently robust to
accommodate these developments.
And for policymakers in the ICT
sector, he said the increasing participation of citizens online also
means that they need to look at issues such as secured transactions and
cybersecurity to ensure an effective online community.
However,
for the full potential of an information society to be realised, Dr
Yaacob said there's a need to look beyond network deployment to consider
ways in which we can leverage on ICT to enable citizen-centric
services, as well as generate vital business opportunities that will
help the economy move up the value chain and stay competitive in the
global market.
He said the Infocomm Development Authority
of Singapore (IDA) is working with key partners in both the public and
private sectors to better integrate infocomm solutions with business
operations and client management processes.
This year's Ministerial Forum, has "ICT-Enabled Communities: Opportunities and Challenges" as its theme.
