15 Percent of World Live with a Disability: WHO/World Bank Report

About 15 percent of the world's people suffer from a disability, and the proportion is set to grow as the population ages, the World Health Organization (WHO) and World Bank said in a report published Thursday.

In the 1970s, the WHO published data indicating that about 10 percent of the world's population suffers from a disability. But now based on its 2010 estimates, the WHO and World Bank's World Report on Disability said that ‘a billion people live with some form of disability, making up an estimated 15 percent of the world population.’…

The Washington Post adds that…the disabilities run the entire gamut of impairment, from blindness and limb loss to chronic pain and mental retardation. The problems, especially among old people, are more prevalent in low-income countries than in rich ones. The report found that the problems are worsened by poverty and dozens of other variables, including stigma, architectural barriers, lack of legal protection, the cost of devices and assistance, and the lack of knowledge by others (especially health professionals) about how to interact with disabled people….

The Guardian writes that…despite a robust disability rights movement and a shift towards inclusion, disabled people remain second-class citizens, according to the report by WHO and the World Bank. One in five experience ‘significant difficulties.’ In developed countries, disabled people are three times more likely to be denied healthcare than other people. Children with disabilities are less likely to start or stay in school than other children, while employment rates are at 44 percent, compared with 75 percent for people without disabilities in OECD countries, the report found….
