The government outlined Tuesday the promotion of renewable energies, such as wind and solar, as well as energy-saving products, to achieve a sustainable society in rebuilding from the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster.
In its environmental white paper, the government also stressed the need to encourage people to be more active in the morning rather than at night while reviewing corporate activities so Japan can overcome the electricity shortage stemming from the disaster through energy savings.
The fiscal 2011 white paper, approved by the cabinet, called for developing agriculture, forestry and fisheries as well as tourism in the disaster-hit northeastern areas, home to rich natural surroundings, and creating environmentally-balanced communities.
Given an estimation that global waste production will more than double in 2050 from the current level in line with population growth in developing countries, Tokyo will encourage the domestic ‘‘venous industry,’’ which turns waste into reusable resources, with the goal of spreading such processes overseas.
