Ashgabat Hosts SPECA Meeting on Sustainable Development in Afghanistan |

Turkmenistan, in the capacity of the chair of the UN Special Programme for the Economies of Central Asia (SPECA), is hosting a two-day forum on promoting stability and sustainable development in Afghanistan.
Representatives of nineteen countries of the European Union, international and regional organizations, financial institutions, business and academia participate in the meeting in Ashgabat. They discuss concrete projects for economic cooperation between Central Asia and Afghanistan in the field of infrastructure development, transport and trade and joint management of natural resources.
The meeting is expected to start the elaboration of a plan of action for economic cooperation between Central Asia and Afghanistan.
The two-day meeting is a follow-up event to the Economic Forum “Enhancing Regional Cooperation in Central Asia: a Contribution to the Long-Term Stability and Sustainable Development of Afghanistan”, which took place in Geneva in 2010.
The forum is organized by the Government of Turkmenistan, as the current SPECA Chairmanship, together with the UN economic commissions for Europe (UNECE) and Asia-Pacific (ESCAP) and the United Nations Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA).
It should be recalled that Turkmenistan was elected chairman of SPECA in 2011. At present, SPECA includes Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
