MANILA, Philippines — Safety in general is important for every individual. It is an issue we take into account in various aspects of our life. More importantly, we ensure that the food we eat is safe. How the food is prepared is what we all take into consideration. Food safety has become an issue of special importance from the process of production to consumption with studies proving that food-borne illnesses have become more widespread.
The rapid globalization of food production and trade has increased the potential likelihood of international incidents involving contaminated food. The integration and consolidation of agricultural industries and the globalization of the food trade has created an environment in which food-borne diseases could become prevalent.
Food and feed are distributed far distances than ever before, creating the conditions necessary for outbreaks of food-borne diseases. As a consequence, food safety authorities have acknowledged that ensuring food safety must not only be tackled at the national level but also through close linkages among food safety authorities at the international level.
At a recent meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Sub-Committee on Standards and Conformance, the Asia-Pacific Cooperation Forum, and the World Bank, a memorandum of understanding was signed in the interest of strengthening collaboration of food safety in the Asia-Pacific region. APEC-World Bank training programs will seek to improve food safety standards and practices in the region as well as to facilitate trade.
The memorandum of understanding on food safety opens the way for an upscaling of food safety capacity building in the Asia-Pacific region which accounts for half of the world’s grain production and which is home to a quarter of the world’s undernourished people.
