Dhaka, May 3 (bdnews24.com) — The government has approved first-ever project for 3G technology launch by state-owned Teletalk.
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday approved the project to launch the technology and extend the existing 2.5G network, planning minister A K Khandker told reporters.
The meeting held at the National Economic Council at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka was presided by prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Planning secretary Manzur Hossain told bdnews24.com that Teletalk would be able to serve the technology to 1.72 million subscribers and 2.5G to over 4.7 million.
Currently Teletalk has some 1.2 million connections, telecommunications minister had told in parliament on Feb 27.
The government will invest Tk 4.24 billion in the Tk 19billion project, while the remaining will be managed from China on a two percent loan.
Manzur said the estimated project period is January 2011-December 2012.
ECNEC also cleared three other projects — establishing Faridpur Medical College and Hospital at an estimated cost of Tk 3.15 billion, developing 16 roads of Gopalganj at Tk 3.88 billion and developing the Gopalganj-Barni-Singipara road at Tk 410million cost.
