The Chinese Government announced yesterday the setting up of an office that will direct, coordinate, and supervise online content management and handle administrative approval of businesses related to online news reporting.
According to an official statement from the State Council General Office, the department, known as the State Information Office, will work to implement the policies of internet communication and promote legal system construction.
“It will direct the development of online gaming, online video and audio businesses and online publication industries, and will also be engaged in promoting the construction of major websites and managing the government’s online publicity work”.
In addition, the office will work towards overseeing telecommunications service providers in their efforts to improve the management of registration of domain names, distribution of IP addresses, and registration of websites and Internet access.
The State Council has appointed four senior officials to lead the State Information office namely; Director of the State Council’s Information Office Wang Chen, Vice director of the State Council’s Information Office Qian Xiaoqian, Vice Minister of Industry and Information Technology Xi Guohua, and Vice Minister of Public Security Zhang Xinfeng .
