Dhaka, Apr 26 (UNB) - The government will soon start the process of enacting a law to protect intellectual property and halting brain drain from the country, Industries Minister Dilip Barua said on Tuesday.

“This law (Intellectual Property Bill) will be finalized within the tenure of the present grand alliance government,” he said while addressing a seminar on ‘Designing the Future’ at the FBCCI conference room.

Barua said the process of establishing an Intellectual Property Institute in Bangladesh would also be completed soon with the support of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

Patents, Designs and Trademarks Directorate under the Industries Ministry, Copyright Office under the Cultural Affairs Ministry, FBCCI and the Intellectual Property Organization of Bangladesh jointly arranged the seminar in observance of the World Intellectual Property Day.

Industries secretary KH Masud Siddiqui, Cultural Affairs secretary Suraiya Begum, FBCCI senior vice president M Jashim Uddin, DCCI vice president TIM Nurul Kabir and FBCCI director Rabbani Jabbar, among others, also spoke at the seminar.

FBCCI president AK Azad presided over the seminar, where Bangladesh Computer Samity president Mostafa Jabbar presented the keynote paper.

Speaking as chief guest, the Industries Minister said that attaining economic prosperity is a big challenge for a developing country like Bangladesh in the present context of globalization.

“We’ll have to face the challenge by building up knowledge-based industry and economy,” he said.

Barua suggested utilizing creativity and innovative power of people in the industrial production process by giving up conventional concept and technology.

Speakers at the seminar observed that the country is being deprived of creative works and economic progress due to the transfer of talents from the country.

They said most of the talented young people here are going to the developed countries simply for lack of proper employment as well as lack of scope for research.

The discussants suggested sufficient allocation for protecting, nursing and developing intellectual property.
