A new report has found cyber security is the fundamental weakness in Australia's national security.
The report by security think-tank Kokoda Foundation has found the threat of cyber attacks is poorly understood by politicians, businesses and the general public.
Online attacks have the potential to endanger critical infrastructure such as electricity and water supply, communication networks and aviation and maritime transport.
The report says Australia is at a tipping point where the current response to cyber security is being rapidly outpaced by the growing threat, putting individual and collective security at risk.
The report recommends a Minister be appointed to oversee cyber issues, and a 10 year cyber strategy be developed.
