The number of global internet users has grown to more than two billion - almost a third of the world's population.
The United Nations telecommunications agency says the number of users at the end of 2010 was 2.08 billion, thanks to major growth in Asia and the Pacific.
At the start of the year 2000, there was just 250 million internet users.
More than 100 million new users logged on in Asia and the Pacific last year, bringing the number of users in the region to 857 million.
The number of mobile phone subscriptions has also grown from 500 million in the year 2000, to five billion at the end of 2010.
Meanwhile, fixed-line telephones have continued a four-year decline, falling below 1.2 billion.
