One by one, politicians considered bribery suspects were taken into custody by the Corruption Eradication Commission’s (KPK).
KPK deputy chairman Haryono Umar confirmed Friday the commission had decided to detain the suspects who allegedly received bribes in connection with the election of a Bank Indonesia senior deputy governor in 2004.
As many as 19 of 26 new suspects in the case were reportedly detained.
Eleven politicians had left KPK office as of 5 p.m. Friday, including Ni Luh Mariani and Engelina Pattiasina of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) who were sent to Pondok Bambu women’s’ detention center. The remainder would be detained at the Cipinang jail.
Former state minister for National Development Planning Paskah Suzetta of the Golkar Party was also detained. “This is not a legal process. It was linked with politics. Thus, I will fight back politically,” he said.
