The Government is starting a move to launch a “Creative Chao Phraya” project by beautifying the riverbanks of the Chao Phraya River and organizing cultural activities along the river in Bangkok.

The project is an effort to develop Bangkok into a Creative City and make it more attractive in terms of cultural tourism, in line with the “Creative Thailand” policy to add value to Thai products and services.

Deputy Commerce Minister Alongkorn Ponlaboot, in his capacity as Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Mobilization of the Creative Economy Policy, and the Director-General of the Department of Intellectual Property, Pajchima Tanasanti, in her capacity as Director of the Thailand Creative Economy Agency, led a group of officials on a boat trip to inspect the Chao Phraya River on 17 January 2011.

Mr. Alongkorn said that the inspection tour, from Krung Thon Buri Bridge to Rama IX Bridge, was carried out in cooperation with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, and the Marine Department. He said that the Creative Chao Phraya project is intended to build up cultural and heritage tourism and generate more income for various communities and the country as a whole. The Chao Phraya River has a long history and is rich in local culture and wisdom, which should be preserved and not allowed to disappear with the passage of time.

Mr. Alongkorn explained that various related agencies would discuss how to develop the riverbanks of the Chao Phraya, the lifeline of central Thailand. For instance, cultural shows such as Thai dances, the khon masked drama, Thai musical performances, should be organized. Light decorations should also be arranged to beautify both sides of the river during nighttime.

Recognized as a symbol of Thai life and culture, the Chao Phraya River is sometimes called the “River of Kings.” It flows 372 kilometers from the lower northern region to the fertile central plains. The river passes through 11 provinces and it has its origin in four rivers: the Ping, Wang, Yom, and Nan, which meet at Pak Nam Pho in Nakhon Sawan province. The Chao Phraya River basin is the most fertile plain in the country, and Bangkok is located in this basin.

Dubbed a multi-faceted “City of Asia,” Bangkok is the most populated city in Thailand. Like Ayutthaya, it was also known as “Venice of the East,” because the Chao Phraya River and canals served as the main communication routes in the early days of its establishment. Apart from serving as the capital city, Bangkok is a communication and transport hub, both domestically and internationally, and it boasts a distinctive combination of modernity and fine art and traditional culture.

Bangkok Creative City, which is part of the Creative Thailand program, aims to turn the capital into a creative center and promote it as a livable city. The goal is to make Thailand a hub of creative industries in Southeast Asia and to boost the economic contributions of national creative industries from the current 12 percent of GDP to 20 percent by 2012.
