New Delhi: A group of prominent Indians have asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to urgently deal with rising corruption 'corroding the fabric' of the nation. The open letter by top executives, bankers, former judges and regulators published Tuesday expressed concern that poor governance was harming India's reputation as a financial centre. 'Possibly, the biggest issue corroding the fabric of our nation is corruption. This malaise needs to be tackled with a sense of urgency, determination and on a war footing,' it said. The letter by a 14-member group including businessman Azim Premji and former bank governor Bimal Jalan was released to national media Monday night. 'What we are deeply worried about is not to allow India's huge growth potential and poverty alleviation challenges to be diluted or digressed from, and which would be a great loss, especially to the poor and the dispossessed.' The group called for setting up fully empowered anti-corruption ombudsman organizations in states, and said it would soon prepare an action plan to deal with corruption, governance deficit and environmental concerns. Singh's United Progressive Alliance has faced several corruption charges in the recent months. The financial scandals include a phone spectrum-licensing scam that resulted in a loss of up to 40 billion dollars to the government. Another high-profile case involved allegations that organizers of the Delhi Commonwealth Games swindled millions of dollars from the October event. UPA chairwoman Sonia Gandhi recently called corruption a 'disease' spreading through the Indian society. At the World Economic Forum's India summit in November, business leaders identified pervasive corruption as one of the main problems hampering India's growth, along with weak governance and regulation. A recent report by the Washington-based non-profit Global Financial Integrity estimated India had lost more than 400 billion dollars to corruption, bribery and tax evasion since its independence in 1947.
