The Thailand Reform Action Plan is being translated into action, starting from January 2011. A committee will be formed to follow up on the implementation of the plan, so that it will be carried out and bear fruit as scheduled.
Details of the action plan, which had been presented by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on January 1 and 9, were approved by the Cabinet during its meeting on January 11.
Prime Minister Abhisit said that he would serve as chairman to follow up on the implementation and mobilization of the plan, with representatives of various agencies as operators. Progress reports on the implementation would be made periodically in order to speed up work. He cited the launching of the plan as a significant step to move Thailand forward.
The Thailand Reform Action Plan consists of four strategies. The first strategy seeks to build the future of Thailand through the development of human resources, children, and youth. The second one seeks to upgrade people’s quality of life and expand the social security system. The third strategy calls for justice and political reform to tackle social inequality, while the fourth one seeks to build a fair and equal economic system.
The plan came after Prime Minister Abhisit on 3 May 2010 put forward before the public a five-point reconciliation plan to resolve conflicts in Thai society and called on people in all sectors of society to join the reconciliation process. The five points seek to uphold and protect the monarchy, resolve fundamental problems of social justice, reform the media and ensure that the media can operate constructively, investigate all violent incidents and seek out the truth, and amend the Constitution.
In order to ease social disparities, the Government launched the program “Six Days, 63 Million Ideas: Joining Hands in Moving Thailand Forward,” from 1 to 6 July 2010. The program aimed to hear opinions, concerns, and grievances from the general public. While a large number of people offered suggestions on how to reform Thailand, many people made complaints about various issues.
The Committee on the Mobilization of the Thailand Reform Program compiled opinions and suggestions from various public forums and submitted them to the Cabinet, which, on 2 November 2010, approved responsible persons to work out the Thailand Reform Action Plan.
Prime Minister Abhisit supervises the strategy on building the future of Thailand through the development of human resources, children, and youth, with Advisor to the Prime Minister Kanok Wongtrangan, as advisor. Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office Satit Wongnongtaey is responsible for the strategy to upgrade people’s quality of life and expand the social security system, with Advisor to the Prime Minister Khunying Supatra Masdit, as advisor. Concerning justice and political reform, Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office Ong art Klampaiboon is the key figure, with Advisor to the Prime Minister Bandit Siriphan, as advisor. As for the building of a fair and equal economic system, former Secretary-General to the Prime Minister Korbsak Sabhavasu is the responsible person, with Advisors to the Prime Minister Apirak Kosayodhin and Savit Bodhiwihok , as advisors.
