Coordinating Minister for the Economy Hatta Rajasa says the government is speeding up the development of Indonesia’s food-producing regions to support food resilience in the country.
Speaking in Jakarta on Friday, Hatta said the government would open new lands for agricultural purposes in food-producing regions, or what he dubbed “ food estates”, so as to increase domestic production of rice and other food commodities.
“We’re speeding up [the development of] food estates. We faced a few problems regarding spatial planning of some provinces and regencies, such as Merauke [in Papua] and other regions.
“We’ve settled the problems, and it really helps. We’re experiencing quite a bad shortage of sugar. We need new lands and this is the authority of the Agriculture Ministry,” Hatta said, as quoted by Antara.
The central government would partner with regional administrations to ensure the opening of new farming lands and to prevent conversion of existing fields, he added.
Hatta encouraged investors to help develop Indonesia’s farms.
“We’re inviting investors to enter, because surely local investors would want to seriously develop our farms. We’ve so far had slow [agricultural] growth, so there is a lot of room for investors to take part,” he said.
